From Drafts to Adoption: The Reality of Standardisation in SAFE4SOC
SAFE4SOC’s standardisation journey, discussed across WP3 and PMB meetings in late 2025, illustrates a key lesson for European cybersecurity projects: producing drafts is only the beginning. Moving from technical proposals to community adoption requires sustained engagement, visibility, and feedback loops.
Within SAFE4SOC, IDMEFv2 drafts progressed technically, but partners openly acknowledged challenges beyond their control-most notably the pace and dynamics of formal standardisation processes. The consortium therefore explored complementary paths, including broader dissemination and alternative standardisation forums, without abandoning the original goal.
Crucially, these discussions reinforced that standardisation success depends on ecosystem awareness. Tools, documentation, and demonstrations play a central role in making standards understandable and usable for practitioners.
SAFE4SOC’s experience shows that standardisation is as much a social and organisational process as a technical one.
Main note: SAFE4SOC highlights the practical realities of turning technical drafts into adopted standards.
