Synthetic Data in Cybersecurity Research: SAFE4SOC’s Practical Approach

SAFE4SOC’s WP5 meetings in March 2025 addressed the use of synthetic IDMEFv2 datasets for AI training and validation. This approach was driven by practical constraints rather than convenience.

Access to real SOC data is often restricted due to confidentiality, legal, and security concerns. Synthetic data provides a controlled alternative that supports reproducibility and experimentation while avoiding sensitive exposure.

In SAFE4SOC, synthetic datasets were used to test clustering, correlation, and natural-language-based analysis techniques. While not a replacement for real data, they allowed the project to validate concepts and integration pathways.

This experience reflects a broader trend in European cybersecurity research toward responsible data usage.

Main note: Synthetic data enabled SAFE4SOC to advance AI experimentation within realistic constraints.
